Why is Te Kāhui Raraunga only releasing some 2023 Census data on 26 September 2024? I provided more information on my Census form.

Te Kāhui Raraunga is releasing Individuals and dwellings data by iwi affiliation and Māori descent data on Te Whata as a result of our Mana Ōrite relationship with Stats NZ. This is the second of three major 2023 Census releases on Te Whata. The final major release on Te Whata will be families, extended families, and households data release by Māori descent and iwi affiliation on 31 October 2024.

Iwi Information Managers and iwi members with read only access to their private iwi page can download their iwi data tables from Te Whata on 26 September 2024. Customised iwi data requests on individuals and dwellings data will also be available through Te Ara Takatū

Will the data tables available on 26 September 2024 have more detail than what is visible to the public?

Yes, the downloadable iwi data tables will have more detail than what is shown in the insights available on Te Whata. Te Whata insights are produced through analysis of the raw data by specialised Māori data analysts, ensuring these insights are presented in a way that is relevant and meaningful to iwi-Māori.

Will the data released on Thursday 26 September result in changes to Te Whata insights for my iwi?

Yes, all iwi data and insights on Te Whata will be updated with 2023 Census data. These are the first official iwi statistics since the 2013 Census. Added variables, such as education and employment, will vary across iwi, depending on the iwi size, based on 2023 Census responses.

On Thursday 26 September, will I be able to see insights about particular topics for my iwi? For example, how many within my iwi speak te reo Māori?

Yes, and depending on the size of your iwi, you may see some topics and variables in relation to individuals and dwellings data by iwi affiliation and Māori descent. This could include insights on languages spoken, home ownership or qualifications.

The more 2023 Census responses (or affiliations by individuals) collected, the more data is available to analyse. These can then be shared on Te Whata as insights for your iwi.
