What 2023 Census data is being released by Te Kāhui Raraunga on 31 October 2024?
On Thursday 31 October, Te Kāhui Raraunga are releasing 2023 Census families, extended families and households data by iwi affiliation and Māori descent on Te Whata.
What is families, extended families and households data?
Families and extended families data tells us the structure of whānau that Māori and iwi individuals are part of, for example two parents and two children. Household data reveals how Māori and iwi individuals are living, including household size, housing quality and income.
Where can I view the data once it has been released?
Insights will be available on Te Whata on Thursday 31 October. We will also be sharing information about the release on our social media channels and website.
Do I need a login to view 2023 Census data insights on 31 October 2024?
No, anyone can view the available insights once they’re on Te Whata. Logins are for Iwi Information Managers, Trustees, CEOs, managers and relevant Iwi Māori Partnership Board kaimahi. Read more about Iwi Data and Iwi Information Managers on Te Whata.
Why is Te Kāhui Raraunga only releasing some 2023 Census data on 31 October 2024? I provided more information on my Census form.
Te Kāhui Raraunga is releasing families, extended families, and households by iwi affiliation and Māori descent data on Te Whata as a result of our Mana Ōrite relationship with Stats NZ. This is the final of three major 2023 Census releases on Te Whata. Māori descent population counts by region and age were released on 29 May, and iwi affiliation and Māori descent detailed individuals and dwellings data were released on 26 September.
All other 2023 Census data will be released by Stats NZ. You can view the full 2023 Census release schedule on the Stats NZ website.
I don’t want to miss out on seeing the insights as soon as they’re released. Is there a way I can receive an update once the insights are ready to view?
If you have a login for Te Whata, you will receive updates to the email associated with your account in the lead up to the release and on the day.

Can I access the downloadable data tables for my iwi on 31 October 2024?
Iwi Information Managers and iwi members with read only access to their private iwi page can download their iwi data tables from Te Whata on 31 October 2024. Customised iwi data requests on families, extended families, and households data will also be available through Te Ara Takatū.
Will the downloadable data tables available on 31 October 2024 have more detail than what is visible to the public?
Yes, the downloadable iwi data tables will have more detail than what is shown in the insights available on Te Whata. Te Whata insights are produced through analysis of the raw data by specialised Māori data analysts, ensuring these insights are presented in a way that is relevant and meaningful to iwi-Māori.
Will the data released on Thursday 31 October result in changes to Te Whata insights for my iwi?
Yes. New and updated iwi data and insights based on the 2023 Census will be released about families, extended families and households. You will also see new variables for iwi members living in families and household that have never been released before on Te Whata such as, income, household composition and crowding.
On Thursday 31 October, will I be able to see insights about particular topics for my iwi? For example, how many within my iwi are living in healthy homes.

In the past, my iwi has received a poster with our key Census insights. Will we receive a poster for this release?
Te Kāhui Raraunga will provide downloadable posters with key 2023 Census insights for your iwi. These will be available later this year, once we have released families, extended families, and households data by Māori descent and iwi affiliation on Te Whata. We’ll share an update on our channels once these posters are available.
