FAQ

Māori AI Governance Framework

Why has TKR created this framework?

To provide objective and ethical advice around the use, development and deployment of AI across the nation, in particular where public services will use AI. This advice will help safeguard the rights of all individuals with regard to their personal data, information and privacy.

How does it relate to the Māori Data Governance Model?

The entire framework is based off the Māori Data Governance model but contextualised for AI. Good data governance will equate to good AI governance because AI is built off datasets. Therefore, if organisations are acting responsibly with the data they collect and use, then acting responsibly with the AI they may use or develop, this creates a safer digital and data eco-system for the nation, for all citizens.

Why doesn’t the framework include Pou 5 from the Māori Data Governance Model?

Pou 5 focuses on data sharing, access and repatriation. When we get to the point of considering AI, it did not make technical sense to retain Pou 5 as it was. Instead, we have taken the relevant advice from Pou 5 and woven that into other Pou of the Māori AI Governance Framework.

What is the point of this framework?

To support ethical AI use, development and governance in New Zealand.

What should my organisation do with this advice?

Digest the advice and consider what it means for your organisation.

What new policies, processes and practices should you employ? What capability do you need to support implementing the advice from the framework?

You can start by spending time exploring the list of already crafted Key Questions and Key Actions in the framework, to figure out what your organisation might need to do differently.

You could consider creating your own bespoke implementation framework that is based off Māori AI Governance Framework but contextualised for your organisation.
